The blue-grey stones of Calle de San Francisco lead past iron balconies, centuries-old façades and the plazas of Old San Juan. Calle San Sebastián is a few blocks away. The harbor and cruise piers are close enough to reach on foot. Above the surrounding rooftops, a plunge pool looks across the historic city toward San Juan Bay.
It is the setting of Alma San Juan, a 56-room boutique hotel that has now joined Marriott’s Autograph Collection, bringing one of Old San Juan’s newer small hotels into the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.
The property, now officially listed as Alma San Juan, Puerto Rico, Autograph Collection, occupies a restored historic building at 405 Calle de San Francisco, placing you in the center of the old city’s restaurant, bar and cultural district.
The addition gives Marriott another distinctly urban hotel in Puerto Rico, one built around the architecture, food and walkable character of Old San Juan rather than the traditional beachfront resort experience.
A New Marriott Stay in Old San Juan
Autograph Collection is Marriott’s portfolio of independently styled hotels, with each property retaining its own name and identity while participating in the company’s reservations and loyalty network.
Alma’s arrival in the collection means travelers can now earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points for stays at the hotel.
The affiliation also gives Marriott Bonvoy members another boutique alternative in San Juan, particularly for visitors who want to spend their trip inside the historic district.
Alma is a very different proposition from the larger hotels along Condado and Isla Verde. Its 56 rooms are contained within a restored Old San Juan building, with interiors pairing contemporary furnishings with references to Puerto Rican craft and the building’s original character.

The restaurant provides an appropriate culinary frame for an Old San Juan hotel. The neighborhood’s architecture, plazas and fortifications reflect centuries of Spanish rule, while Puerto Rican cooking has transformed those influences into its own deeply local cuisine.
Mar y Rosa, on the rooftop, offers another setting, with city views and outdoor dining beside the pool.
At street level, Alma Café and Wine Bar operates throughout the day, serving coffee, quick bites, specialty drinks and natural wines.
The three venues allow the hotel to function beyond the traditional room-and-lobby model. You can begin with coffee downstairs, stop at the rooftop between excursions and return for dinner without repeating the same setting.
A Hotel Built Around Walking
Alma’s principal amenity may be its address.
The hotel is steps from Calle San Sebastián, one of Old San Juan’s best-known streets and the center of the annual Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián.

The hotel may be especially attractive to Marriott Bonvoy members who want a more individual experience than a conventional branded property.

Getting There
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is approximately 12.5 miles from the hotel. The drive to Old San Juan generally takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
San Juan has nonstop service from major gateways across the United States, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, New York, Newark, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas and Chicago.
Once you reach Alma, a car is not essential for exploring Old San Juan. Most of the neighborhood’s major sites, restaurants and bars can be reached on foot.
The result is a Marriott stay that’s distinctly different from the company’s larger Puerto Rico resorts.
Alma is small, urban and tied closely to the streets outside its doors. The rooftop pool provides a private retreat above the city, while Andaluz, Mar y Rosa and the café keep Puerto Rican flavor at the center of the hotel.
