There are Caribbean hotels with long histories, and then there is Jamaica Inn.
The Ocho Rios resort has spent decades building a reputation around privacy, discretion and a deeply personal style of hospitality. Its cottages and suites look toward a quiet stretch of sea. Its scale remains intimate. Its service has long depended on staff members who know how to anticipate a guest’s preferences without turning the experience into theater.
Over the years, the hotel has welcomed generations of returning visitors, public figures and travelers drawn to an older Caribbean idea of luxury: fewer distractions, attentive service and a setting with its own sense of permanence.
Now, Jamaica Inn has named Owen S. Henry Jr. as its new hotel manager, placing an experienced Jamaican hospitality executive in charge of the resort’s daily operations and guest-experience programs.
Henry will report to Kyle Mais, who was recently promoted to managing director and became a shareholder in the property.
A New Operational Leader for Jamaica Inn
Henry brings more than 20 years of experience across Jamaica’s luxury and all-inclusive resort sector.
His career has included senior positions with Grand Palladium Resorts, Bahia Luxury Resorts, Sandy Haven Resorts, Royalton Resorts and Sandals Royal Caribbean. His background covers rooms operations, food and beverage, guest services, quality assurance, human resources, staff training, health and safety, budgeting and resort repositioning.
At Jamaica Inn, Henry will oversee the daily details behind one of the island’s best-known hospitality experiences, from service standards and team development to the consistency of each guest stay.
“We are thrilled to welcome Owen to Jamaica Inn,” Mais said. “He brings an exceptional depth of operational expertise and a collaborative leadership style aligned seamlessly with our values and vision for the future.”
Mais said Henry’s experience at several of Jamaica’s leading resorts would help strengthen the guest experience and support the property’s next chapter.
A Career Built Across Jamaica’s Resort Sector
Henry’s record includes several measurable operational gains.
He helped take Grand Lido Negril from 69th to the top-ranked hotel in Negril on Tripadvisor. He also led Hideaway at Royalton Negril to a top-five Caribbean ranking and contributed to a 35 percent improvement in profit-and-loss performance at Sandy Haven Resorts.
Those achievements point to the two sides of his new position at Jamaica Inn: preserving a highly personal guest experience while also managing the demanding operational work behind a luxury hotel.
His management style has been described as disciplined and people-focused, with an emphasis on team development, staff performance and guest satisfaction.
“I am honored to join Jamaica Inn, a property that holds such a distinguished place within Caribbean hospitality,” Henry said. “Jamaica Inn’s legacy is rooted in exceptional service and genuine warmth, and I look forward to working alongside the remarkable team to continue delivering unforgettable experiences for guests from around the world.”
Why Jamaica Inn Holds a Special Place in the Caribbean
Jamaica Inn has always occupied a different category from the island’s larger resorts.
The property is closely associated with the early era of Caribbean luxury travel, when Jamaica became one of the region’s defining destinations for international visitors. Ocho Rios was central to the island’s rise, and Jamaica Inn became one of the hotels most closely connected to the destination’s identity.
The hotel’s appeal has never depended on an extensive list of diversions. Instead, it has relied on privacy, personal service, a small number of accommodations and a strong relationship between staff and returning guests.
Its architecture, cottages and beachfront setting carry much of the character associated with classic Jamaican resort design. The experience is quiet and residential, with dining, spa treatments and beach time forming the rhythm of a stay.
The resort’s reputation has also been sustained by continuity. Family involvement, long-serving team members and a careful approach to change have helped Jamaica Inn retain its personality as other hotels across the region have expanded or adopted more standardized concepts.
Henry now becomes part of the group responsible for protecting that identity.
Working Alongside Kyle Mais
The appointment comes as Mais takes on a larger role at the resort.
His promotion to managing director and shareholder gives Jamaica Inn a leadership team combining ownership involvement with Henry’s operational background.
The arrangement allows Mais to guide the hotel’s broader direction while Henry concentrates on the daily work of service delivery, staff leadership and the guest experience.
The partnership will be especially important for a property where small details carry unusual weight. At an intimate resort, the quality of a stay can depend on the consistency of housekeeping, the pacing of a meal, the response to a special request or the way a returning visitor is welcomed back.
Henry’s background in training, quality assurance and cross-department leadership gives him direct experience in those areas.
Experience Beyond Traditional Hotel Operations
Henry also brings expertise in resort openings, repositionings, stakeholder relations and financial oversight.
He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Management from the College of Agriculture, Science and Education, along with studies in human resource management, business processes and economics. He also earned an associate degree in agricultural science and holds several certifications in hospitality and operational management.
The environmental management background is a notable part of his professional profile at a time when Caribbean resorts are placing greater emphasis on resource use, environmental responsibility and long-term stewardship.
His wider education also reflects the increasingly complex role of a hotel manager. The position now extends far beyond front-of-house service, requiring knowledge of finance, labor, safety, training, sustainability and asset performance.
Protecting a Caribbean Hotel Legacy
The appointment brings a new operational voice to Jamaica Inn without changing the qualities responsible for its reputation.
Henry inherits a hotel with a loyal following, a celebrated name and one of the clearest identities in Jamaican hospitality. His task will be to maintain the consistency returning guests expect while helping the resort perform at the highest level behind the scenes.
At Jamaica Inn, luxury has long been expressed through discretion, familiarity and personal attention. Henry’s career suggests a similar emphasis on people, performance and the small decisions shaping a hotel stay.
His arrival begins a new chapter for the Ocho Rios resort, but the central assignment remains the same: protect what has made Jamaica Inn one of the Caribbean’s legendary hotels
