WestJet is making a bigger push into the Caribbean and nearby sun destinations this winter, with new routes, added frequencies, and significantly more capacity from several Western Canadian cities, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The airline says its Latin America and Caribbean capacity will rise 12 percent year over year for winter 2026-2027, giving WestJet its largest schedule to the region to date.
The Caribbean additions include new nonstop service from Winnipeg to Belize City and Punta Cana, twice as many weekly flights between Edmonton and Montego Bay, and additional service between Saskatoon and Cancun.
WestJet is also emphasizing its position as Canada’s largest airline to Belize, Honduras, and Aruba, along with Mexico.
New Winnipeg Flights to Belize and Punta Cana
Winnipeg is getting one of the most significant Caribbean expansions in the new schedule.
WestJet says its Latin America and Caribbean capacity from the Manitoba capital will increase 26 percent year over year.
The airline is adding new nonstop service from Winnipeg to Belize City, Belize, giving travelers a direct link to the country’s main international gateway and onward connections to destinations including Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and the mainland.
WestJet will also launch new nonstop service between Winnipeg and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, adding another Canadian gateway to one of the Caribbean’s largest resort destinations.
The carrier is increasing Winnipeg frequencies to several other warm-weather destinations, including Liberia, Costa Rica, and Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Los Cabos in Mexico.
Edmonton Is Getting More Montego Bay Flights
Jamaica is also receiving a significant increase from Alberta.
WestJet says it will operate twice as many weekly flights between Edmonton and Montego Bay as it did last winter.
The additional service comes as the airline increases overall Latin America and Caribbean capacity from Edmonton by 34 percent year over year.
Montego Bay remains one of Jamaica’s principal international gateways, serving the resort corridors of Montego Bay, Rose Hall, Negril, and much of the island’s northwestern tourism region.
WestJet is also doubling weekly service between Edmonton and Los Cabos, Mexico.
More Cancun Flights From Saskatoon
Saskatoon will see the largest percentage increase among the Western Canadian cities highlighted by WestJet.
The airline says its Latin America and Caribbean capacity from Saskatoon will rise 77 percent year over year.
WestJet is adding an additional weekly flight between Saskatoon and Cancun, increasing the route from 4 to 5 weekly flights during peak travel periods.
The same increase is coming to the Saskatoon-Puerto Vallarta route.
Cancun remains one of WestJet’s largest sun destinations, serving travelers headed to the city itself as well as Isla Mujeres and the Riviera Maya.
WestJet Is Growing Its Caribbean Network
The latest schedule reinforces WestJet’s focus on Caribbean and warm-weather flying during the Canadian winter.
The airline says it remains Canada’s largest carrier to Aruba, Belize, and Honduras, three countries that form an important part of its Caribbean network.
Aruba remains one of WestJet’s principal southern Caribbean destinations, while Honduras service gives Canadian travelers connections to the country’s Caribbean tourism market, including Roatán.
Belize City serves as the primary international gateway for Belize, while the new Winnipeg route broadens the airline’s Canadian reach to the destination.
The Dominican Republic is also gaining another Canadian nonstop through the new Winnipeg-Punta Cana service.
Western Canada Is Driving Much of the Growth
WestJet’s largest regional increases are concentrated in Western Canada.
Saskatoon leads with 77 percent year-over-year growth, followed by Regina at 64 percent, Edmonton at 34 percent, Winnipeg at 26 percent, and Calgary at 18 percent.
Much of the Calgary expansion is centered on Mexico, including twice-daily service to Los Cabos, additional Cancun flights, and new nonstop service to Merida.
Regina will also receive its first nonstop WestJet service to Los Cabos.
Across the network, WestJet says the growth comes through a mix of new routes, higher weekly frequencies, and larger aircraft.
The result is a winter schedule with more Caribbean flying from Western Canada, led by the new Winnipeg routes to Belize City and Punta Cana, increased Edmonton service to Montego Bay, and additional Saskatoon flights to Cancun.
