KINGSTON, Jamaica – The recently appointed rookie head of Jamaican national reconstruction, who prior departed one of Jamaica’s highest diplomatic posts, just announced he was going to Peru to learn on the job, almost a year after the Melissa hurricane destruction and on the cusp of the next hurricane season. This came after a long career in the military. The prime minister must think that Magic Man can be a competent military leader, ambassador and disaster doctor, all in a single lifetime.
He is wrong and the country knows it.
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
Hurricane Melissa
Less than a year ago Jamaica Defence Force Commander Alvin Gayle was appointed to lead the Officer of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management after hurricane Melissa. The further appointment of another parallel leader for disaster management is not only wholly nonsensical, but a clear search for a scapegoat by the leader of the current non-performing administration.
Most of the hurricane relief money is unspent. Multi million loans in the hundreds are being given to Asian companies.
We have no time, people are homeless and the next hurricane season is upon us.
The present government of Jamaica as well as other Caribbean countries have seen fit to squash square pegs in round holes for a myriad of government posts with inner circle nincompoops who appear to have no beginning or end, but the trite support of the ruling cabal. They are all members of the secretive curry favour clique.
They know who they are, but worse, the paying public have shut their eyes.
Learning On The Job
The last thing one would expect in a third world country beset by a giant disaster, one of many blasts from the past, would be an unprepared government, floundering in it’s own incompetence, before passing the buck to unsuspecting and unqualified reconstruction officials, while the appropriate or experienced go wanting.
Perhaps it is the result of a search for a suitable stooge, the kind found at the head of the class, seeking to please teacher in any way possible.
The problem with this pantomime of unsuitable persons in high posts, a cabinet full of integrity suspect individuals and many ministers bearing a past due date are the three million Jamaicans suffering under the yoke of quasi lunacy when measured, competent and meaningful leadership is called for now, not later.
Or, we could just ignore the obvious and swipe left.
