A New Hotel Just Opened in the Dutch Caribbean, With 30 Rooms, Direct Rainforest Access, and an Ocean-View Pool

Saba isn’t like other places. It really isn’t for everyone. There are no beaches or long stretches of sand. The focus here is what’s under the surface — on the reefs, the drop-offs, and the marine life that has made this one of the Caribbean’s top dive destinations.

Above the water, the island rises quickly. Green slopes climb into the clouds, trails cut through rainforest, and the villages hold tight to the mountainside. At the base of that terrain, a new hotel has opened its doors.

The News

The new Scenery Hotel Saba is now open in Windwardside, bringing a boutique stay to the island known as the “Unspoiled Queen.” The property places you at the foot of Mount Scenery, the highest point in the Dutch Kingdom, with direct access to both the island’s hiking network and its world-class diving.

It’s a small, purpose-built hotel designed around Saba’s landscape — where most of what you do happens either below the waterline or along the steep trails above it.

Where You’re Staying

Rooms here face the sea, with private terraces that open toward uninterrupted water views. The layouts are clean and modern, with outdoor space as a constant feature — a place to step out and see the coastline drop away below you.

You can choose from Ocean View Terrace roomsOcean View Cottages, and a larger Scenery Suite with one bedroom. At the top end, Scout’s Sky Room offers elevated positioning with a broader view across the island and the surrounding Caribbean.

Across the board, the focus stays consistent: ocean-facing angles, private outdoor space, and proximity to the island’s terrain.

What You Do Here

Saba is defined by movement — straight up into the forest or straight down into the water.

From Windwardside, the trail to Mount Scenery begins nearby, climbing through dense vegetation to the island’s highest point. The route moves through shaded forest, with steps and narrow paths guiding you upward.

Below the surface, the island’s marine park draws divers from around the region. The waters surrounding Saba are protected, with volcanic formations, pinnacles, and steep walls that create varied dive sites. Visibility is often strong, and marine life ranges from reef fish to larger pelagic species depending on the site.

The hotel connects guests to diving experiences, making it easy to move from room to boat to dive site without complication.

Between those two anchor activities — hiking and diving — the pace settles. Windwardside remains compact, with a handful of restaurants, small bars, and viewpoints looking out across the sea.

Dining on Property

The hotel includes its own dining and bar setup, offering a central place to eat after a day outdoors.

The approach is straightforward and relaxed, aligned with the island’s pace. You’re not navigating multiple venues or large resort spaces. Instead, you have a single setting where meals, drinks, and downtime come together at the end of the day.

A Different Kind of Caribbean Stay

Saba has never followed the typical Caribbean formula.

There are no cruise ports, no long resort corridors, no beach clubs lining the shore. The island draws travelers who come for specific reasons — diving, hiking, and a quieter environment shaped by the terrain.

This new hotel adds comfort and consistency to that experience without changing what makes the island distinct.

You still spend your time moving through the landscape. You still head into the water for most of the day. You still walk through a village that feels unchanged by larger development.

What’s new is the place you return to.

Getting There

Saba is located about 15 miles south of St. Maarten. Most travelers arrive via a short regional flight into Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, known for its short runway and hillside setting. Ferry service is also available from St. Maarten.

From the airport or port, Windwardside is a short drive up into the hills, where Scenery Hotel Saba is now part of the island’s small collection of places to stay.

Prices at The Scenery

Rooms start at $242 per night right now for a “Scout’s Sky” Room. For a one-bedroom suite, it goes up to $401.50.
