Kendrick Lamar made a seven-year-old Detroit kid’s birthday wish come true with a surprise phone call that’s got the whole city talking about what compassion looks like.
Romell Frazier Jr. lost both his arms in a pit bull attack back in March, and after months of recovery and rehabilitation, his one request was simple: he wanted to hear from his favorite rapper.
When Kendrick picked up the phone on his seventh birthday, the moment became something way bigger than just a call.
“What’s up man, how you feeling?” Kendrick asked him, and Romell’s response was pure joy.
The rapper didn’t just say “happy birthday” and hang up, either. He spent real time with the kid, telling him straight up: “You continue to be great, continue to keep that smile on your face. You’re giving us a whole lot of inspiration with how strong you are.”
Kendrick even went a step further and invited Romell to visit him in Los Angeles, turning a birthday call into an actual trip that’ll change this kid’s life.
According to ClickOnDetroit, Romell’s recovery is far from over. He’s got more surgeries ahead before he can start using prosthetics, and he’s had to relearn everyday tasks that most kids take for granted.
But his spirit hasn’t been broken, and that’s what Kendrick saw when they connected.
This isn’t the first time in recent weeks that a rapper stepped up for a kid facing impossible odds either.
Just days before Kendrick’s call, 16-year-old Leeland Harris from Atlanta got to meet Ludacris backstage at his Piedmont Park concert after battling osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Romell’s family navigate the long road ahead with medical bills and ongoing care.
