Lizzo is laughing. Now.
She is talking about men and flirts and also being overlooked before superstardom. The Detroit born singer recently opened up about how her DMs turned into a shot shot for men that rap. But she says it was not always like that.
And according to Lizzo, her DM messages came from the big dawgs.
“I’ve gotten some slides to say hi, but like slide slides: all of ’em,” she said. “The ones that you would think. Not no more obviously.”
The statement alone has sent the Hip-Hop rumor mill into overdrive. But, there is another layer to this. She explained that her upbringing shaped how she interpreted attention from men and it ain’t what you think.
“I grew up a big girl and guys didn’t like me like that,” she said. “Where I grew up like if you were fat, you were ugly, which, that’s not true. Fat doesn’t equal ugly. But where I grew up, that’s what it was. So I was kind of invisible to all the guys.”

Clearly, Lizzo was not around us, because we like all shapes and sizes on the East Coast.
That perspective seems to explain why she viewed celebrity outreach through a purely professional lens. While others might assume a DM from a famous rapper comes with obvious intent, Lizzo said she often needed friends to translate what was really happening.
“I don’t even know what this person’s intention is. I thought it was all friendly, lowkey, and people had to tell me, ‘Hey, no, this person is trying to f### you.’ I was like, ‘What?’ I’m so oblivious to things like that, even to this day,” she said.
Now, it feels like Lizzo is telling a bigger story about perception, self image and how success can suddenly change how the world reacts to you, even if you feel like the same person inside.
