St. Kitts tourism and aviation leaders used this year’s Routes Americas conference in Rio de Janeiro to pursue new air service opportunities and strengthen ties with several of the region’s most important airline partners.
A high-level delegation from the destination held meetings throughout the conference focused on expanding flight frequencies and refining existing routes, part of a broader effort to maintain strong air access for the Caribbean island.
The discussions included talks with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Copa Airlines, Porter Airlines and Air Canada, according to officials.
Focused Push on Airlift
The mission centered on identifying opportunities for additional flights and strengthening current airline relationships as the destination looks to sustain its momentum in the North American and regional travel markets.
Officials said the meetings also examined ways to optimize existing routes and ensure St. Kitts remains a competitive destination within the hemisphere’s aviation network.
The delegation brought together leadership from the island’s tourism and infrastructure agencies, including Tivanna Wharton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism; Kelly Fontenelle, Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority; Adeola Moore, Chief Executive Officer of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority; Calvin Duggins, Chief Operations Officer of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority; and Candice Kimmel, airlift consultant for the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.
The group worked jointly to present the destination’s infrastructure, tourism demand and marketing plans to airline partners.
Airline Strategy
The meetings in Rio were designed to align the tourism authority’s marketing efforts with airport and infrastructure planning, according to officials.
Representatives from the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority participated in discussions with carriers to evaluate airport readiness and operational opportunities tied to new or expanded routes.
Tourism officials emphasized that direct engagement with airlines at events like Routes Americas plays a critical role in maintaining air connectivity to Caribbean destinations.
“These discussions were vital to maintaining the destination’s momentum and ensuring St. Kitts remains a priority for major carriers across the hemisphere,” officials said.
Caribbean Aviation Panel
During the conference, St. Kitts Tourism Authority CEO Kelly Fontenelle also participated in a panel discussion focused on aviation connectivity across the Caribbean.
The session, titled “Spotlight on the Caribbean,” was moderated by aviation strategist Robert Kokonis and brought together tourism and aviation leaders to discuss strengthening regional air networks.
Fontenelle emphasized the importance of collaboration between Caribbean destinations and airline partners to sustain tourism-driven economies.
“Attending Routes is always an invaluable opportunity for St. Kitts,” Fontenelle said. “It allowed us to engage directly with airline partners, explore new route possibilities, and strengthen the connections that bring visitors to our shores.”
She also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and innovative airline partnerships in expanding connectivity to the Caribbean.
Positioning for Future Growth
Routes Americas is one of the aviation industry’s primary gatherings for tourism boards, airports and airlines to negotiate routes and discuss market opportunities.
For St. Kitts, officials said the meetings are part of an ongoing strategy to expand airlift while reinforcing relationships with existing carriers serving the destination.
The island currently receives service from several North American airlines, and tourism leaders continue to prioritize air connectivity as a central driver of visitor growth.
