A California housesitter went viral when she discovered the home she was watching had two separate cutouts of Donald Trump in the common space.
On June 11, Ashley Marquez posted a TikTok showcasing the unexpected items she found while housesitting. “Why the [expletive] would you have this in your house?” she asks.
“Weird behavior,” she adds.
The comments generally agreed that the Donald Trump cutouts were an odd sign. “Hey, so I wouldn’t be house sitting anymore,” added one commenter.
“I would no longer feel comfortable house sitting,” added another. “The house could sit itself.”
“I’d leave immediately,” commented a third.
How Often Is Housesitting Unsafe?
Marquez’s unusual discovery prompted concerns about safety for housesitters. While her situation appears to have been safe, it did highlight that many housesitters might not know the circumstances of the homeowners in question.
Housesitting is generally considered a safe arrangement, particularly when it is organized through established platforms that rely on reviews, identity verification, and extensive communication between homeowners and sitters.
An analysis by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation of nearly 15,000 housesitting arrangements found that only 55 received three stars or lower. This suggests that the overwhelming majority of experiences are positive. These disputes have been described as rare, although experts note that some negative experiences may go unreported because users fear retaliation or simply leave the platform altogether.
What Are Other Examples of Odd Housesitting Experiences?
Many housesitters report encountering unusual situations that fall short of genuine danger but create discomfort or confusion. Online communities devoted to housesitting are filled with stories about strange instructions, surprise overnight guests, and awkward misunderstandings.
One user in a subreddit thread did share a story where an odd housesitting experience took an unfortunate turn. “The husband came home drunk at midday, after having already been drinking and partying the entire week they were away,” shared one Reddit user. “He then began aggressively pressuring both his wife and me to drink with him, and he … made many sexual and rude comments. … I decided, for my safety, that it was best to leave.”
AllHipHop reached out to Marquez for comment via TikTok direct message and comment. We will update this story if she responds.
