Donald Trump is not buying the Los Angeles Lakers, but his name somehow found its way into a staggering $12.5 billion deal involving Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. That name Kushner set off a series if events. We know Jared. Now, we discuss Josh.
Josh and Jared Kushner are brothers, in case I needed to state that.
A billionaire investor, Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger have agreed to purchase the Lakers from Mark Walter for approximately $12.5 billion. That would make this the largest franchise sale in American sports history. Damn. That’s so much money, it could cure cancer.
Kushner is the founder of Thrive Capital, but that is not the part causing eyebrows to levitate. He is also the younger brother of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. You see where this is headed.

The rumors grew because Walter is reportedly connected to insurance companies facing federal fraud and tax investigations. Those scrutinies, the Lakers sale and a buyer related to the Trump…has people talking heavy. We’ll get into LeBron in a bit.
There is currently no evidence establishing that Trump engineered this sale or that the investigations forced Walter to sell the Lakers to Kushner and Iger. But is sure seems odd, like rain that comes from the Earth and goes into the sky. Weird. I know that made no sense.
What’s crazy is the chatter was loud. So loud, Trump heard t. The White House addressed the situation directly.
“This has nothing to do with President Trump or his administration.”
Well, there you have it. Or do we? Can we really believe anything they say? Answer that in the comments.
Still, people are asking questions because Walter only acquired controlling ownership of the Lakers from the Buss family in June 2025. Now, roughly 14 months later, the franchise is changing hands again at a significantly higher valuation. Walter purchased a controlling majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers from the Buss family in 2025 for a then-record valuation of $10 billion.
Twelve point five billion dollars for the Lakers sounds astronomical until you remember what the Lakers actually represent. This is not simply basketball. The franchise sits at the intersection of sports, celebrity, entertainment, fashion, Hip-Hop and Hollywood.
And then there is LeBron. Are you still here? Word is LeBron James broke out finding out about the sale. The Lakers loss is the Sixers gain. And what a gain it is!
Iger understands Hollywood. Kushner understands venture capital. What does Trump know about…all of these things? Everything! But I am keeping it in the rumors for now.
Trump, meanwhile, apparently gets nothing. For now.
At least he gets another headline with his name in it.
