André 3000 just turned his instrumental piano project into a full cinematic experience, and it’s streaming exclusively on Mubi right now.

The short film, titled “7 Piano Sketches,” was co-written and directed by André alongside Graham Mason, expanding on the instrumental EP he dropped last year that caught everyone’s attention when he wore a literal grand piano to the 2025 Met Gala.

This isn’t just a music video or some random visual accompaniment. It’s a complete narrative that follows a character as he navigates New York City after dark, carrying a piano on his back.

What makes this move interesting is how André’s been evolving creatively over the past few years.

His 2023 solo album New Blue Sun was a flute-led instrumental project that leaned into new-age territory, and now he’s doubling down on this instrumental direction with his piano work.

The film gives it visual form, turning the piano sketches into a character study of someone moving through the city with this instrument as both a literal and metaphorical weight.

Each person André encounters in the film has their own connection to the music, their own story that intersects with his journey.

The fact that he’s putting this on Mubi, a platform known for curated cinema rather than mainstream streaming, shows he’s thinking about this as art first and everything else second.
