KINGSTON, Jamaica – As Jamaica marks Emancipation and 64 years of Independence, JN Money is commending Jamaicans overseas for helping to strengthen the country’s economy and support recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
Horace Hines, general manager of JN Money, said the Emancipation and Independence season underscores the continuing impact of the diaspora on Jamaica’s national development.
“As we celebrate who we are, we should also use this moment to decide what we will build next,” Hines said. “The diaspora has helped Jamaica through every season, channeling love for family, community and country into year-round investment that supports our progress and recovery.”
JN Money, the only Jamaican-owned remittance brand operating globally, serves customers in 18 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Philippines, Nepal, Ghana and several Caribbean countries.
Research by the Caribbean Policy Research Institute has found that the Jamaican diaspora’s impact extends beyond remittances to include investment, philanthropy and exports totaling about US$4 billion annually, with an additional US$1.5 billion in unrealized potential.

Hines also pointed to the diaspora’s response through the JN Group’s ISupportJamaica Fund for Hurricane Melissa. He said more than J$14 million has been donated by members of the diaspora to support the recovery of early childhood institutions, children’s homes, places of safety, homes for the elderly and other at-risk groups in areas affected by the storm. The support includes a recent £5,000 donation raised by HYPHNT, a U.K.-based footwear brand.
“As we host our own Emancipation and Independence celebrations under the theme ‘True Yardie, True Connection’ across the JN Money network, we salute the Jamaican diaspora for its continued support,” Hines said. “Every transaction through JN Money tells a story of connection — love for family at home and a lasting commitment to country.”
He urged Jamaicans overseas to use the season as a reminder of the role they continue to play in Jamaica’s growth.
“Celebrate Jamaica and continue to support with purpose,” Hines said. “Let this Emancipation and Independence season remind you how national pride translates into continued progress.”
