Doja Cat is the latest person to pile on rapper Tyga and his new project $TARFACE, which has been getting absolutely roasted since it dropped.
Doja Cat decided to add her own two cents during a livestream.
“Nobody asked me anything about Tyga, but I felt like saying this. Tyga is a penis for making an AI album,” she said.
The backlash against Tyga’s project has been relentless. Pitchfork handed out its first 0.0 rating in two decades, which is basically the nuclear option for music critics.
The album’s use of artificial intelligence in its production became the central talking point, with plenty of artists and industry folks questioning whether this is the direction Hip-Hop should be heading.
Doja Cat’s comment fit right into that larger conversation about AI’s role in music creation.
In a recent interview with VIBE, Tyga explained his reasoning and compared the whole situation to something that happened decades ago.
“I’ve never spoken on this with anybody because I always felt like it’s similar to a magician explaining how he does his tricks,” Tyga said. “If you like it, you like it; if you don’t, you don’t. I don’t care. It’s supposed to give you an experience and a feeling. But we definitely used AI as a tool. And I know people are going to be mad about me saying this, but it’s where technology is going. It’s no different than when Auto-Tune came out. Some people were opposed to it, but real artists took it and used it.”
The comparison to Auto-Tune is where things get complicated.
Tyga’s team used AI to generate synth sounds and other production elements, which is fundamentally different from pitch correction software.
Still, Tyga’s standing firm on his creative choices, and he’s not backing down from the criticism.
Doja Cat and other artists have been vocal about their concerns with AI training platforms like Suno, which essentially feed on existing music to create new content.
