Drake Warns His Rivals “The Pen Isn’t Dry” After Kendrick Lamar Battle
Drake is tossing lyrical warning shots again, and this time he sounds like somebody who may be inviting the smoke back into the building.
Drake sounds like he is daring his old enemies to answer him, warning rappers dropping new albums that his pen is still very much operational.
“These guys are dropping albums it’s like… hello and goodbye, and careful with that reply cuz the pen isn’t dry”
Now, who exactly are “these guys”?
Hmmmmm….
Drake did not attach names to the statement, so nobody should start issuing subpoenas to Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, Future or anybody else just yet. But after everything Drake has experienced in the last couple of years, he knows exactly what happens when he says something this cryptic. Hip-Hop is going to investigate.
And that last part is particularly provocative: “careful with that reply cuz the pen isn’t dry.”
That does not sound like a man requesting peace.
The obvious question is whether Drake is genuinely ready for another battle after the historic warfare with Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick unquestionably changed the temperature around Drake with records like “Euphoria,” “Meet the Grahams” and the monstrous “Not Like Us.” Drake fought back with “Push Ups,” “Family Matters” and “The Heart Part 6,” but public opinion largely handed Kendrick the victory.
So why poke the bear enclosure again?
Maybe Drake believes surviving that battle actually liberated him. The worst happened. He got mocked, memed, dissected and declared defeated by large portions of Hip-Hop, yet his career kept moving. Maybe he knows nobody is on it like that.
That can create a dangerous kind of confidence, either way.
There is another possibility. Drake might simply be reminding rappers that Kendrick Lamar beating him does not mean everybody can beat him. Those are two completely different propositions.
And I suspect THAT might be the message.
Drake has spent years collecting subliminals, grudges and broken friendships across Hip-Hop. If somebody interprets his latest comments as an invitation and responds on wax, we could find out quickly whether the Boy really wants another lyrical altercation.
Because saying the pen is not dry is one thing. Somebody picking up their pen is another.
